Bone Broth with Turmeric

Many people are familiar with using bone broth in soups, casseroles and for braising meat and veggies.  But broth can also be consumed straight up because it's such a great source of minerals and glycine. Once you make up your broth you can add various flavours.  We usually just add a pinch of salt to ours but sometimes we do this recipe. Flavoured Bone Broth   Print Prep time 1 min Cook time 2 mins Total time 3 mins   [...]

Paleo “Pasta” Sauce

This is a great little sauce we've made to go with our zoodles or meatballs on several occasions.  The fresh basil leaves are what make this tomato sauce so don't leave them out.  It's inspired by Pete Evan's recipe in his Family Food cookbook. Pete's Pasta Sauce   Print Prep time 5 mins Cook time 25 mins Total time 30 mins   Author: Claire D Recipe type: Tomato Sauce Type of food: Paleo Serves: 3½ cups What you [...]

Super Easy 30 Second Mayo

I know what you're probably thinking:  Why would I make my own mayo when I can just buy it?!  Well mainly because when you make at home you'll be using REAL ingredients with good oils.  Whereas those you'll typically find at the supermarket have been made using vegetable oils and with other additives and preservatives. Plus, this mayonnaise is so easy it's ridiculous.  I was always put off making mayonnaise because it sounded so complicated.  But the thing is [...]

Fun & Easy Veggie Snack

Fun easy veggie snack for a warm afternoon tea.  This was really easy to do and Chef Dom loved it!  Plus I felt like a fun mum!  Give it a go.  All you need is a rip avocado, carrots, a butter (we used sunflower seed butter but you could use any nut butter) with sultanas, cherry tomatoes with cheese and olives and home made mayo.

Chef Dom’s Clean Green Drink

If you're feeling like a refreshing drink after the last few days (especially for those of you lucky to be enjoying hot summer weather ) then this will hit the spot: Ice cold water with fresh mint leaves + limes + cucumber + kiwifruit & grapes = super delicious according to Chef Dom 😋.

Paleo Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin is one of our favourite vegetables.  And we LOVE pumpkin soup. Some foods are just made to be eaten on cold winter's days and a piping hot (or for Chef Dom just warm) bowl of pumpkin soup is surely one of these!   This variation is a little different from the usual in that it's made with a base of tomato which ups the vegetable intake and gives and extra depth to the dish. 2.0 from 1 reviews Paleo [...]

Real Food Lunchbots Lunchbox

How's your week going? If you're looking at stainless steel lunch boxes here's another to consider. It's a LunchBots lunch box. We love this one as well as the Planetbox.  They have different pros and cons.  I'll do a post on that as soon as I get a spare moment - which is pretty much never but will make some time! Today Chef Dom's real food lunchbox has: Kumara Chips (= Sweet Potato chips rubbed with coconut oil then [...]

Berry Jam (With Chia Seeds)

Too easy and yummy. Have you tried this?! Goes great with our ABC grain free bread :-). 5.0 from 1 reviews Chia Seed Berry-licious Jam   Print Prep time 5 mins Cook time 30 mins Total time 35 mins   Author: Claire D Recipe type: Baking Type of food: Paleo Serves: 1 jar What you need: 1 Cup of frozen or fresh chopped berries 1 Tbsp of Maple Syrup 2 Tbsp of Chia Seeds 2 Tbsp of Water [...]

Real Food Lunchbox: Eat The Rainbow

Another Chef Dom lunch in his PlanetBox: Interested to know if many of you make your own lunches?! Comment below "buy" or "make". I know when I was working in an office I used to either buy it or more often just not eat any and keep working through... One thing I love about making a Real Food Lunchbox is that you really do get to eat the rainbow of colours :-). In Dom's lunchbox today: Baked Kumara (Sweet [...]

Super Simple Strawberry Bliss Balls (Grain Free)

Looking for a yummy party food dish or just something to keep on hand for the occasional indulgence? Bliss balls seem to be pretty popular at the moment. And we can see why - it was really hard to make these without stopping to have a little taste test - or two or three :-). Here we used strawberries with banana and chocolate to make our super simple strawberry bliss balls but you can make your bliss balls [...]

Fish & Chips

No recipe here.  Just super quick, easy, fun and delicious meal made with white fish, baked potatoes with rosemary and broccoli.  Chef Dom has invited his friends to the table (they have their "snow ploughs" on).  Love his imagination!

Twice-Baked Stuffed Butternut Squash (with Apple & Pork)

This is one of our favourite recipes inspired by one of our most loved from The Paleo Kitchen cookbook.  You can make up pretty quickly (especially if you have pre-cooked the mince).  Sometimes I pre-cook the squash (the first stage of the cooking) and then its super fast with pre-cooked mince. This ones always a winner with Chef Dom and I really like it too.   Stuffed Butternut Squash (with Apple & Pork)   Print Author: Claire D Recipe [...]

Chicken Dish for a Dinner Party

We had a dinner party the other night and I needed to have something easy to put together that wasn't going to be a major stress.  Not sure about you but entertaining people - especially when you've made a bit of a big deal about how your eating "real food" and cooking a lot - is so far for me always a tad nerve wracking.  Having said that since doing this dish I think I would more often than not [...]

Green Beans with Artichokes and Olives

Something fancy for a dinner party you can try this dish.  I'd never tried artichokes before and enjoyed the taste especially the combination of them with olives and beans. This is a very simple recipe but looks great if you are having guests around.  We've done this with our Pan-Seared Chicken Dish. Green Beans with Artichokes and Olives   Print Prep time 10 mins Cook time 10 mins Total time 20 mins   Author: Claire D Recipe type: [...]

Cauliflower Mash

Cauliflower mash is the classic paleo/low carb substitute for mashed potatoes.  Not that you can't eat potatoes when your "eating paleo" but when you are looking to reduce the amount of high energy carbs you're eating then this dish is a fantastic alternative (and I'd say even tastier than the original). Cauliflower mash is great to pull out of fun at a winter dinner party and if you do it right, it's so similar in texture and taste that [...]

Bone Broth & A Fun Photo Competition

Sometimes we get so fixated on not liking "organ meat", that we forget some foods that are enjoyed widely are actually offal and great sources of nutrient dense food. Bone broth (preferably simmered until the bones nearly crumble) is one such food. Marrow is amazingly delicious – if you’ve never tried it you’re in for a treat. Pork rinds are also offal! Some cuts of meat like cheek are considered offal even though they’re muscles. There’s incredible nutrition [...]

Super Simple Spinach Frittata

We've made this one several times and had it again this weekend. Simple recipe that's quick and easy to make. Love it that we can be looking at vegetables in our garden and then 30 minutes later be eating them . So much more satisfying than ever imagined it could be back in our days living on takeaways and frozen meals. This recipe will serve 2-3 depending on how hungry you are! Real Food Lunchbox: Favourite Foods?

If you have children what's their most favourite lunchbox item - the thing you just know they will always eat? If it's a fruit then put that down but let us know what is their favourite non-fruit item too. For Dom it would be olives (as well as any fruit). Here's another LunchBots real food lunchbox for Chef Dom. This one with: Chicken & avocado Kebab of olives & tomato Be Nourished Ruby Pefection (red cabbage) Sauerkraut Apples [...]

Real Food Lunchbox: Cinnamon Apples & Leftover Roast

Chef Dom's real food lunchbox today - just a mix of leftovers from dinner last night and trying something new with the apples - coating them in cinnamon - great little trick as tastes yum and hides any slight browning that might be going on with the apples by morning.  This is a great tip I picked up from Belinda at The Root Cause: Cinnamon apple chunks Kumara (sweet potato) chips Leftover lamb roast Chia pudding with blueberries Sicilian [...]

Coconutty Paleo Porridge (With Hidden Cauliflower)

This is something you might not have tried before for breakfast. We like it hot or cold (cooked and then cooled). It's a substitute porridge but made with a cauliflower base! Sounds weird right? Chef Dom and I find it super-delicious. But give it a go and let us know what you think! Note that there are of course loads of different ways of mixing and matching different ratios of these ingredients. Keep them all white to mimic [...]

Soft Boiled Eggs

What are your favourite breakfasts? We eat eggs for breakfast nearly every day as they're so quick and easy. One of our favourites is soft boiled eggs with bacon and brussel sprouts and then something to dip with - either kumara fries, asparagus spears or like here - homemade grain-free bread. I barely got a chance to take these pics as Dom was very keen to get going with eating this meal! He's been very interested in chickens [...]

Making school lunches – Love it or hate it?

One of Chef Dom's lunches from a week ago: Roasted Cauliflower Grapes & Feijoas Sausages & Lettuce (Free range organic beef meat) Tomatoes Home-made Mayo Chocolate Bliss Ball Wondering who else has been enjoying not having to make school lunch boxes this holidays? I kind of have a love-hate relationship with them. On the one hand I've worked out what works and what doesn't (for the moment at least) and, because we've been eating 95% real food without packages [...]

Super-Delicious Crunchy Grain-Free Granola

Here's one of our breakfast ideas. This one is very much a case of do it how you like it as no hard and fast rules on what goes into it. This is something we use more as a snack that a breakfast meal but if cereals are your thing and you are looking for a replacement for the traditional sugary option or for a sometimes meal or transition too then this is a great option. It's actually really [...]

Perfect Apple Cinnamon Paleo Porridge

The weather where we are is definitely turning colder which led to us making some porridge this morning. But the great thing about this "porridge" is that it tastes great hot or cold so whatever the weather is where you are you can still give this a go. This porridge is grain-free and can be dairy free depending on milk you use.  The key to making it "painless" is preparing the night before 🙂 Apple Cinnamon Chia Porridge [...]

Making Banana Nice Cream

Super delicious "nice" cream on hot summer day. This is so simple it's not really a recipe.  Just take three ripe frozen bananas (pre-frozen in cut pieces is easiest) and blend with one ripe avocado and 1-2 tablespoons of honey.  Either eat immediately or place into a mould to freeze and then enjoy on a stick! TIPS: Actually just putting a stick through a whole banana and chucking it in the freezer makes for a delicious banana [...]
